John’s journey in financial markets began humbly in 1983, delivering mail for Jones Grice & Co, a stockbroking firm in Sydney.

It was during the tumultuous aftermath of the 1987 financial crash that John found his niche. He became fascinated with convertible notes and their potential for profit during times of extreme volatility. His expertise blossomed during his time in London with Dominguez Barry, where he specialised in Convertible Bonds, delivering impressive returns even in recessionary environments.

Returning to Australia, John joined Bell Buckle (now Bell Potter), where he witnessed firsthand the lucrative opportunities brought by the demutualisation of exchanges like ASX and SFE. This experience ignited John’s curiosity about other potential investment avenues, leading him to ownership in LIFFE and memberships in major exchanges like CME, CBOT, and NYSE.

In tandem with his financial ventures, John embarked on entrepreneurial pursuits, founding and funding BoardroomRadio, which grew to become Australia’s largest Webcaster. Eventually, he divested his shares in the company.

In 2016, John co-founded Aitken Murray alongside Angus Aitken. This time also saw John's foray with Nick Fordham into sports broadcasting, acquiring broadcast rights to the Shute Shield Rugby Union competition, aired weekly on 7TWO.

Transitioning to John Murray Advisory in 2022, John expanded his scope, providing fundraising and advisory services to a diverse range of companies in areas such as coal, law, fintech and e-commerce, both listed and unlisted.

Beyond his professional endeavours, John has dedicated significant time to community engagement, serving as the President of Easts Rugby Union Club for seven years.
